| Dave Versluis tenth in the European Championship 125cc Dave Versluis of the Frentec Champ Team finished tenth overall in the European Championship 125cc Series. Last weekend the final round of the series was held in Fermo in Italy. Versluis rode a great first moto and finished in seventh position. In the second moto he had to retire from the race because his bib mousse came out of the tyre.
The weekend started not that well for Dave on Saturday. In the third lap of free training he jumped too short on the finish table top, and his bike stopped suddenly. He heard a rattle, and checking the bike from the side of the track, he discovered that the rear hub had broken and this sprocket was completely skew. He went back to the pits to take his spare bike to ride at least some laps. Despite his bad luck he still managed to set the 13th fastest time in the free practice session. In time practice he set the sixth fastest time after several fast laps. During the session he lost a few positions and dropped back to 16th position. Dave decided to go out again and improved himself on his fastest lap time and ended the session in ninth position. In the first moto his start wasn’t so good but he was still able to start the race in ninth position. He was riding in ninth position for a long time but just when he tried to close down the gap on the eight place rider he lost his rear brake. His brake came back after some laps and this gave him some space again on the 10th and 11th place riders. Because of a crash and a mechanical problem of a rider in front of him he won two places and finally finished the race in seventh position. In the warm up on Sunday morning Dave got a mechanical problem with his race bike. This meant that he had to race the rest of the warm up and the second moto on his spare bike. This bike is not so powerful as his race bike so Dave had to make the best of it. When the gate dropped in the second moto he went into the first corner around eleventh position. Because of a few mistakes in the beginning of the race he dropped back to 13th position. Unfortunately soon after he got a problem with his rear tyre. His bib mousse came out of the tyre and because of this he had to retire from the race. Despite his DNF in the second moto he finished 13th overall in Italy. In the championship he finished in tenth position. This was the last race for Dave aboard a KTM 125cc. His next race will be the penultimate round of the Dutch Open Championship Series in Markelo on September 25th. Dave will race here aboard a CLS Kawasaki 250F. |
